Announced today, the Queensland Government’s support will assist the ongoing operations at Glencore’s Mount Isa copper smelter.
The smelter is integral to Incitec Pivot’s north Queensland operations, providing a key part of the feedstock to produce fertilisers.
Jeanne Johns, Incitec Pivot Managing Director and CEO said the Queensland Government’s support was a vote of confidence for the region.
“The government’s investment will support north Queensland’s industrial capability and provide certainty for businesses and jobs in the region,” Ms Johns said.
“Incitec Pivot’s operations across north Queensland support around 520 regional jobs. Today’s funding commitment underpins fertiliser supply and manufacturing at our Mt Isa and Phosphate Hill facilities, ensuring we can continue to provide jobs to support the agricultural sector.”
The smelter provides Incitec Pivot’s Mt Isa manufacturing team with a sulphur by-product from copper production, which is refined and then transported via rail to the Phosphate Hill plant. From here, it is used to make high quality Incitec Pivot phosphate Fertilisers.
“These fertilisers are then transported to Townsville where they are distributed to Australian farmers to ensure proper soil nutrients to help grow their crops, as well as being exported to international customers out of season,” Ms Johns said.
“We are committed to this region which is a key economic zone for the state and will play a crucial role in the economic recovery of Queensland,” Ms Johns said.
“We are also grateful for the long-term local support we have received from state MP, Robbie Katter, the Mount Isa to Townsville Economic Development Zone (MITEZ) and Townsville Enterprise. We recognise their commitment to the economic growth of the region.”
